Jerry and Fox

Driving into New Haven yesterday about 4:30 I saw the fox again on Rt. 146, walking on the side off the road. I hate to see her in the road; I am afraid she will be hit. When I first saw her, I thought it was a big cat, then was able to slow down and take a closer look. She takes my breath away. What a glorious wonderful animal. I trust her cunning will protect her.

Had a quick dinner with Tommasso at Yorkside -- grilled provolone and tomato and rye, with ice cream for dessert. He's leaving on Wednesday to go back to Italy, but I'll see him in two months. Hee hee hee. I'm going to Tuscany! Can't quite believe it. Ran into Moira at Koffee on Friday and was talking about the trip. She said, "Oh, you'll go to Venice and Florence," and I stopped her and said, "No, I plan to just stay around Pisa." She was horrified! She said, "You're just going to stay in Pisa for ten days? You have to go to Venice!" Then when I told her I was going to rent a car, she said, "You're going to drive in Italy?! Oh my god." I said, "Moira, are you a good driver?" She said, "I'm terrible." I said, "Well, I'm a very good driver, so I'm not worried about it. I drove in TRINIDAD!" To which her partner replied, "I drove in URAGUAY!" We laughed, as the point is if you can drive in those places, you can drive ANYWHERE. Then I said to Moira, "Say something nice about Italy to me." And she did.

The Jerry Seinfeld show was funny. Even tho my ticket was $80, I still couldn't see his face, which was frustrating. It was a HUGE theatre. The opening act was some guy whose name I can't remember. Tell me this: Why is it that Black comics always need to bring up the topic of kids and spanking, saying it's a good thing, or making a joke of it? I find it extremely annoying. This guy did the same thing. On the flip side, Jerry made some funny jokes about bribing his three kids to get them to do what he wanted, and it was far more amusing and intelligent, than making lame jokes about hitting. And spanking IS hitting, I don't care how you package it. Have come from a childhood where I was hit and spanked often, I know whereof I speak.

Anywho, Jerry was funny. I really enjoy how he makes jokes of the mundane, and the everyday, and is often so clever and perceptive as well as laughable. He voice wasn't so good, so that was slightly off putting, but I guess I'm glad I went. It's almost not worth it tho if you can't be in the first ten rows. They should have at least had video projections of his face up on the huge stage monitors. Oh well. Now I can say I saw him live.

Glossy Ibis

We had our staff lunch and all the healthy food and fresh strawberries and chocolate covered cherries (need some decadence) were gobbled up. WN is off to South Asia for the summer, GC to Sweden and India, me to Italy, Lea to India, M to Block Island, MH back to Romania, LW to Hungary, MT back to Vermont to make cheese. One of the perks of this job is having friends all over the world. But, would that they were all ten minutes away, and we could commune at will. Think I am almost close to nailing a non-stop flight from JFK to Pisa for about $1300. Which is very very good for this time of year, and how great is a non-stop?! Paid off to ask the faculty what travel agents they use.
Where's area code 305?

Sam sent me a photo of the glossy ibis who she says are right in my neighborhood this time of year. I had seen flocks of what I thought were some kind of vulture or wild turkey or something, and now I know what they are. Will drag out the binocs which are lurking in the trunk of my car and get a closer look when the tide is going out or coming in. They feed in the wet marshy areas before they dry out between ebb and flow.

Hey, I got the non-stop Delta flight nailed! Now I can feel excited! And non-stop is such a relief. I'll use my bucky pillow in a window seat and sleep and sleep. Ordered vegetarian meals. Lots of frequent flier miles. Woo-hoo! 305 is Miami, Ciao!!

Ahimsa

Means non-injury. Raw. Vegan. Organic. Kosher. A wonderful restaurant in New Haven, and where our staff lunch will come from tomorrow. Black bean and rice, and roasted vegetable wraps, and salad. Yum. Big ol' WGSS party yesterday celebrating everybody. New acting chair next year, TL leaving, ED leaving, MP leaving. The transience of academia.

One more choir rehearsal till the concert. Was singing one song on Monday night and started to cry. The music and the singing resonates in the body I think, and releases tension, which allows tears to surface. And Angela is just so fine and funny and talented. http://www.discomuseum.com/AngelaClemmons.html But the women in the choir aren't that friendly. Lots are there with friends, and when I sat in the front row last time, the woman next to me didn't even make eye contact! Need to get out of the northeast . . .

Still trying to get my flights and car for Pisa, Italy. Have calls into four travel agents. Hopefully I can nail something down tomorrow.

Cinco de Mayo

Here's a photo of Buzz whose second birthday was Tres de Mayo. Another cute munchkin. Just watched "Babel" on dvd. Not bad. Held my interest. That's all I care about. Did lots of yard work today, lots of cutting back the ivy to reveal the bluestone making up the paths. It's satisfying when it's done, but this is the way I get ticks, I'm afraid. Dug up the primroses in my Edgerton garden yesterday after work, the ones I lifted from Scott's garden a few years ago, as grass had grown among them so profusely that there was no way to weed it out. Will plant them in the field space in the lawn here. Bindi and I went searching for the fifty foot dog training lead in two other places today. No luck.
And we didn't do our homework for class tomorrow. I hate homework. Always have. Did buy a very interesting green chair at a tag sale today for $10. Everything was being sold for whatever donation you wanted to make to the American Cancer Society. Also while riding in the car that old REM song came on, "It's me in the spotlight, losing my religion . . ." and for some reason it made me cry. Not that I need a good reason these days. Made dinner for M & M & S -- pasta with pesto, salmon, steamed cauliflower, salad, fresh strawberries sweetened with agave nectar. Yum.

We're gonna have a fifteen minute May pole celebration tomorrow, and then I might have some help digging in the Edgerton plot, as I can't use a shovel any more. Went to feed Bravo yesterday at Annette's, but he was nowhere to be seen. Too bad. He's a great cat.

M & S showed me the gravestone of Simon Leetes, which is right near the house, in what used to be a continuation of the front yard before route 146 was put in. Odd to find such an old gravestone all by itself so nearby. There were two deer nearby as well.

Got six lovely handmade munchkin cards in the mail the other day. Happy moment.

Bravo

My neighbor's cat. Get to visit and feed him while she is away this weekend. He was fine with me at first, but now hides when I go to visit. Hope to be able to win him back into my favor. Will bring treats.

Went to the new pet store in Branford last night looking for a "dog training lead." A fifty foot length of cord to put on the dog when she is in the yard and won't come when I call. Can easily step on the lead to get her. She did well at the first recall workshop last Sunday. But today she is still weird. Wanting to be on my lap the whole time I'm trying to work. I think she was traumatized by my office meltdown last week. Either she's trying to comfort me, or wants me to comfort her to make sure it won't happen again.

Anyway, there were so many adorable puppies at the pet store, to die for! I held a tiny black pom; way too cute. The dog lead was $35 so thought I'd check Agway, who only had thirty foot ones, so guess I'll have to bite the bullet.

Wrote a poem about caffeine for my sister in law, but don't know how to retrieve it from her blog comment site.

The trip to see the munchkins had many joyful moments even though there was some sadness. The kids loved the Bindster. I was able to go swimming in the local community center several days in a row. T's birthday and I's concert were lovely, and we kept busy going shopping, and attending a crafts fare, and going out to lunch, and playing with the pup, and going to the dog and skate park, and opening presents, and playing with the pop gun, and I can't remember what else. Saw a very nice Frank Lloyd Wright exhibit at the local Museum of Art and Science.

My lettuce, beets, parsley, and radishes are coming up, and my tulips are blooming their heads off. Have to get help spading the garden now, since my knees are in such bad shape, but . . . oh, well.

Rache and I went to the St. Ronan Street dog park yesterday, where Bindi played with a beautiful greyhound named Oberon. What long legs, what a long nose! Nice conversation with Obie's person. The weather has been glorious.

Went to gospel choir rehearsal the other night and was glad I did. Some of the songs are really gorgeous, but don't think I'll mention the performance to anyone, since I'm still just partly invested. But Angela is so fine, so funny, so talented, such a good teacher.

ho hum

Something's up with Bindi. She doesn't want to be in her Yale office bed, and has wanted to be held quite a bit. She doesn't seem ill. Perhaps she's just picking up the tension around here.

Going to gospel singing rehearsal tonight, altho I'm not into it this time. It just feels like too much. Maybe I'll just go to the rehearsals and not do the concert. Not gonna put any pressure on myself. Took Bindi to a recall (Bindi, COME!) lesson yesterday at ABC Obedience. Learned a few things. Two more sessions. Think I talked Robi into getting a pod coffee machine, since she was lusting after my bad Dunkin' Donuts cappacino. Then a visit to the Robs and their pet mice, one of which just gave birth, but the babies are too new to be seen. It was great to see them as usual.

Tommaso and I went to the chihuahua meetup on Saturday at the Hamden Dog Park, where I got yelled at by a big dog owner for having dog treats in my pocket! I said, Tommaso, we have to leave, and I started to cry again. Daily tears these days. But we went to the St. Ronan Street dog park and had a great time, then I showed him Edgerton park and the community gardens, which he loved, and then we went to a noodle house for lunch. So the day was recovered.

Centripetal

A painting by my friend Tommaso Gazzarri. I like it very much. I think I might try something similar but with blues, aquas, cobalts, turquoise.

Yesterday afternoon on the way to the Shoreline Soul gospel group rehearsal, I saw a wild fox on Moose Hill Road. As I drove by, she turned and looked at me, then walked into the woods. The sighting filled me with wonder.

As horrible as the shootings in Virginia are, I object to the media characterizing the event as the "worst massacre in US history," or some such. Perhaps OF THAT KIND. But not the worst shooting in the nation's history.

Boots

Bindi and I were on the Guilford green this morning and met THE CUTEST pomeranian puppy named Boots, 11 weeks old. This web photo is the closest representation of what he looked like, but does not even begin to do justice to his CUTENESS. He was mostly black, with tan boots on his feet, the softest fluffiest fur, and so sweet and affectionate. If I ever get a sister or brother for Bindi, I think it will be a "pom."
I got up early and went to an estate sale. I only spent five bucks on a garden hoe, some closet organizing shelves, and a gift for a friend, but the experience was oddly moving. My guess is that the person or persons living there had passed away, because absolutely everything in the household was being sold. Not clothing, but everything else. This person/s had a full woodworking studio, tons of computer equipment, a huge set of chemistry glassware, books on gardening, cooking, wildlife, novels, wonderful framed contemporary art. Someone more creative than I could write a beautiful poem about all these people meandering and scrutinizing and picking over a lifetime of someone's posessions.

Had to go to CVS to get some baby aspirin for Bindle. She's been under the weather since her Lyme disease vaccine yesterday; lethargic, no appetite, probably sore. The vet told me to expect this. The vet also showed me how to EAG. 'Nuf said. Went to Foodworks and got soy sauce, brown rice, balsamic vinegar, face wash, organic chicken broth, and a button that says "Proud to be an American Against the War."
Stopped at Page Hardware and got a birthday present for Tobi-wan. Then went to Fleischman's and was able to find pants and a top that fit me. They do not carry plus sizes, but sometimes I am able to fit into XL's that they carry. I've gained back all the weight I lost when I was sick. Dr. Artemis told me to keep visualizing the things I want to change, be positive, get very clear about what I want. Some affirmations:
I see myself feeling light and full of vitality.
My knees are healing with every step I take.
The sweetness in fruits and berries satisfy me.
My body is a temple I want to honor.
I am patient with the changes I am making.
Moving my body is a joyful thing.
Loving my body is easy.

Videotape

Adam Hyde 2005, videotape
This is one of Adam's installations, made from videotape. I think it's extraordinary. Clean, three dimensional, contemporary, evocative. He is going back to England on Sunday; what a pleasure to meet him. I have commissioned him to do a small portrait of Bindi. I'm so glad he agreed.
Poor little Bindle. Took her to the vet today for some vaccination updates, and one has wiped her out, may be causing her some pain. I don't have any baby aspirin in the house but will get her some tomorrow. We went to the dog park today, and she ran around for a long time with Sophie, a Welsh terrier about her size. I had a nice chat with Sophie's person, Christine.
VERY busy at the Yale office today. Non-stop. So much is going on at this time of year, one event piled on top of another. I stopped at Van Wilgen's this morning and got some yellow sticky traps for David and I to control our fungus gnats on our houseplants. Ick.
Saw my naturopath this week, Dr. Artemis. I hadn't seen her in months 'cause Yale changed my health provider (Anthem to Aetna), and naturopaths weren't covered until I single handedly got that policy changed. Aetna made an "exception" for Yale, so that naturopaths could be covered. Anyway, it was great to see her; she is upbeat and positive, and full of loving energy. It's rare to find someone who has found their perfect calling; she has. www.revivewellnesscenter.com

It's Now April 12

This is Adam and Bindi outside the Madison bookstore last Friday. Adam's girlfriend Mihaela took this fine photo. She had this tiny little digital camera. Hope the one I ordered takes pictures as good as this one. I like how Mihaela got not only Adam and Bindi's faces, but also the sidewalk, and the bookstore in the background. Bindi is wrapped in a baby blanket that Rachel had in the back of her car. How cute is that?

Don't ask me what I've done since the last post. One of the great things about blogging, like any kind of journaling, is that it remembers the mundane details, as the dramatic ones are easier to keep in mind. But life is a string of mundane events, not in a bad way, but that's just the way living is. One thing after the other, some great, some good, some neutral, some bad, some horrifying.

This thing with Don Imus is sickening. But at least it's more interesting than waiting to find out who the father of Anna Nicole's baby is. Uck. And now I have to boycott Starbuck's coffee because of their latest anti-union activities. If any business needs a union for it's employees, it's one as big as Starbuck's. And Wal-mart.

Great thing happened today!! Got two letters from my niece I. and one from Em. That made me SO happy! Will see them next week. Can't wait. Also got emails from two friends I haven't heard from in a long time, one in Orlando, FL, and one in London, well, actually she's in Sweden now for a while. She has a new book coming out in July. I miss her.

The play last Sunday with Cherry Jones was very very good. It was an hour and a half long with no intermission, which is perfect for me. I splurged today as one of my clients told me that Jerry Seinfeld is performing in Wallingford in May, and that's only about 45 minutes from me, so I got a ticket online. Didn't bother to try to find someone to go with me, as nobody likes Seinfeld as much as I do, and none of my friends can afford that ticket price. $85. I know, I know, it's a lot, but I never do this, and seeing him in New York would cost twice that much.

Doubt

Photo is of the Shubert Theatre in New Haven, rennovated.

M & M were here last night, and M and I were able to sit in front of the fire while she ate dinner and have a chat. Very rare, very nice.

Made myself go do some errands today, after an 11:00 am client. She is again getting into a relationship with someone who is not nice to her, and we talked about being attentive to the "red flags" when we are first getting to know someone, and loving ourselves enough to end the madness before we get badly hurt. Easier said than done, esp. when we come from families where love is so conflated with abuse. "Gee, that hurts. You must LOVE me!"

Put Bindi in the front seat, and drove to find Grove Gardens in Clinton, just to check it out. It's a garden center, which has been renamed "Pinks", and I found composted manure with organic humus on sale for $2 a bag. Good price. One of the staff there was taken with Bindi and said her mom had a dog named Bindi. Drove back and stopped at a couple of shops I'd never been in, which was fun. Came home and called James, the teenager who lives nearby who does yard work for Annette and Pat, and made an appointment for him to come over on Monday, which I now realize is not good cause I want to go hear Azizah al Hibri speak on Islamic feminism at Yale on that afternoon.

Oh, MM, the woman who owns the house on the lake whom I talked with about possibly moving there if I need to, called me today and offered me a ticket to go see Cherry Jones in "Doubt," at the Shubert Theatre in New Haven tomorrow. She was gonna take her mom, but mom turned her down. From the Shubert website: "Set against the backdrop of a Catholic school in 1964, DOUBT is the story of a strong-minded woman faced with a difficult decision. Should she voice concerns about one of her male colleagues...even if she's not entirely certain of the truth? The play examines the line between gossip and truth, discipline and compassion, certainty and doubt."

Interesting book title in the New York Times book review section: CONSUMED: How Markets Corrupt Children, Infantilize Adults, and Swallow Citizens Whole, by Benjamin R. Barber. I already agree with it.

And finally, in a moment of shop therapy 'cause I've been feeling sad, I bought a Fuji S700 7MP Digital Camera with 10x Zoom and Fujinon Lens, complete with all the peripherals and a $100 coupon for Shutterfly for $249, free shipping. I guess I really need to read the aforementioned book.

Yellow Clivia

This is what my yellow clivia looks like, all beautiful and bloomed out. They still sell for about $75 each, but they have certainly come down in price in the past five years.
I've been pointing it out to everyone who comes to the house since they might never see another.
Fun day today. Rachel came out to pick up Frances, and brought Mihaela and Adam with her. Adam wanted to see the ocean so we went to Hammonassett State Park with the dog. It was cold and windy, but the waves were dramatic and Bindi was in heaven. On the way back we stopped at R.J. Julia booksellers, www.rjjulia.com, a great independent book shop with a cafe and cool gifts in Madison, the next town over. Came back to the house, stoked the fire, and served lunch of chicken pot pie, three cheese quiche, fresh asparagus, salad, brown rice, apple cider, and hot cross buns. Yum yum. Didn't make any of it, but went out early this morning to Bishop's, while Frances was watching cartoons, and got everything I needed. Everyone seemed pleased with the meal. After, Francie wanted to work on her school project which was to create something out of recycled materials. She wanted to make a tv out of a big cardboard box, but after conferring with her mom, it was decided to make a cat condo for Misty and Camilla, so they have a place to hide when Bindi harasses them. What they created was just delightful, covered with pix of dogs and cats and other catalog cutouts, complete with a transparent "sky light" made from a pie container.
After everyone left, Bindi and I went to Page's where I knew I could get some organic seeds for the garden. Got Ferry Morse organic green beans, swiss chard, and something else I can't remember right now. Then went to Foodworks and saw that they have another set of organic seeds, by Botanical Interests, I think. Yeah, that's it. www.botanicalinterests.com

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I'm so tired. Have Frances tonight and in order to entertain her after I picked her up from school, we went to a 5pm showing of "Meet the Robinsons." She liked it; me, not so much. Then we went to the diner for food, then home where she watched a Hillary Duff movie until it was time for lights out. So I had to do little direct entertaining. Ok, more tomorrow.

Exhaustion

Bindi and I went off to the ABC Obedience School this morning for the monthly nail clipping extravaganza. I always enjoy seeing the other dogs, and today didn't disappoint. The SWEETEST little dachshund puppy named Peanut who was so gentle and pretty, with the softest fur. Peanut is short for Peanut Butter Cup, cause the top of her is chocolate colored and her underside the color of peanut butter. She also had a hyper sister named Destiny, a pug, with those horrible bulging eyes and smashed face that makes her have a snoring sound all the time. There was another dachshund named Tawny who had suffered a back injury and was paralyzed for a while. After going to the traditional vets for several weeks without results, her human took her to a chiropractor and after the first treatment Tawny was able to stand up! I love that story.

Bindi and I then went to Van Wilgen's garden center, bought some pansies, a new variety of morning glory, several tiny iron seahorses on deep discount, and a pack of romaine letter starts. They have beautiful things. Then to Stop & Shop for provisions, including the purchase of a citrus and sage all purpose natural cleaner made by Imus, where all profits go to foundations for kids with cancer. How could I pass that up?

Once back home, I hooked Bindi onto the tie out line, and got to work on a one sixth portion of my mandala garden. First I dug up the earth down to six inches, then mixed in some peet moss, pelletized lime, greensand, and organic seaweed compost. Then I planted the romanine starts, beet, coriander, and poppy seeds from last year, and black spanish radish seeds, the fruits off which my nutritionist says very verry good for us.

That little bit of gardening was exhausting and my arthritic joints were screaming. I came into the house and took a long nap. It's 11:30 now and I'm going back to sleep.

Dazzle Me

This is a photo of Coco Fusco, a performance artist/writer/professor, who did a lunchtime presentation yesterday for the Photography and Memory Workshop that LW organizes.
In her current project she is exploring the reality of women in the military who become interrogators of prisoners of war in places like Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo Bay. She is trying to understand and raise awareness of how women in the military are trained to carry out the kinds of torture they do. Fusco did a slide show of illustrations of the specific tortures that are taught, and showed a bit of film footage of her and seven other colleagues who agreed to experience a simulated interrogation at a U.S. training facility for soldiers in Pennsylvania. The seven women were put through the same training that soliders experience when they are being taught how to survive as prisoners of war. Her belief is that our government and the American people are not outraged enough about the torture being done in the name of the so-called "War on Terror" and the Bush administration. She was extremely provocative, the topic was painfully heavy, and the discussion was honest, challenging, and wide-ranging. I questioned her on why she admitted to being surprised that women could commit such acts of torture and violence, especially when there are so many cases of mothers who abuse their children in ways that could clearly fall into the category of torture. I added further that women who commit these crimes against children are usually repeating what happened to them, in the absence of having healed themselves from such atrocities perpetrated by their own mothers and fathers. She said she did not want to use this theory to explain what was happening, that this was too "simple," put women in the role of victims, and that these female soldiers were carrying out a duty, an order, not unconsciously compulsively repeating what was done to them, a la Alice Miller. She said most men and women go into the military for a j-o-b, not because they want to kill or torture. I would counter that anyone who chooses the military for a job is on some level aware that killing might be a part of it, and on some level is agreeing to do that. Men too suffer childhood abuse, and perhaps there is a part of those male survivors who again, unhealed, are not averse to passing on the violence, either through the military service, or in their own families. Violence is violence.
On to happier matters. Patti came over this morning and M & M and I had coffee with her. Then Bindi and I went over to visit Annette, and we sat outside in the sun for a while. It was a glorious cool warmish day. Then off to the post office to return a bunch of clothes from Coldwater Creek. The fabrics were gross. They used to have almost all their garments made from high quality cotton, now a lot of it is acrylic, polyester, spandex, etc. Yuk. The post office closed at 1pm, but they let me in at 1:05, for which I was very thankful. Then we went over to the Guilford Food shop and got some the marrow bones that Bindi likes to chew on, and I was seduced by some rose plants they had just gotten in from Pinchbeck's down the road. I bought a lavender rose bush, and hope that the fragrance will be as strong as other lavender rose blooms I have smelled. Smelt? Then across the street to Paws on the Green to look around. Ended up buying some Innova cat food, and yet another conversation about pet foods.
Off then to the Madison Flower and Garden Center to see what they had to offer. I asked them how their prices compared with the now defunct Fonicello's Garden Center, but a young man working there said they were more expensive but try to make up for it with customer service. I said, "Great! You got any coffee?" He said "No, but how about a hug?" We were outside, it was said very sweetly, others were around, so I said "Sure!" and we exchanged a quick friendly embrace. I thought it was kind of a hippie guy thing to do, and kind of nice. I didn't buy anything. Got a sandwich from Subway, then dropped into Agway where a Merrick pet food rep was giving out samples to the doggies. Bindi had a bit of Australian sausage which she liked very much. Ok, the pet food discussion again. Turns out Science Diet (Hills) is owned by Colgate! And the reason all the vets carry it is that Hills sponsors lots of vet conferences, gives scholarship money to veterinary schools, and offers many incentives for vets to carry their products. And that many vets are not taught nutrition in medical schools, not unlike people docs.
Been taking the trazedone to sleep, and it seems at least to be giving a bit more REM sleep, cause I've been having intense dreams. Still not waking up feeling any more refreshed tho.
Signed up for the "white women's" gospel choir again, six weeks starting April 16. I'll miss one rehearsal cause I'll be away, but it was such fun last year.
Tommaso brought me and Bindi a bottle of Origins dog shampoo cause he was in the shop and saw it and said he just had to get it. It smells of lavender which is such a clean fresh sent.
Hey, my clivia that I thought might be yellow, actually is, and is about to bloom! Yellow ones are not common at all, so it is very exciting. It is a baby plant from my friend Paula, which has grown into a big plant. The secret to getting them bloom which M has taught me, is to keep them outside in the fall until just before the first frost. That sets the blooms.
Interesting message on my cell phone the other day. A bone marrow donor bank in California reached me looking for my friend Isa, as her bone marrow might be a possible match for a patient. Isa had signed up with the bank because apparently some Latina blood or marrow, I'm not sure which, is hard to come by. And she gave the bank my info as a contact person. Well, Isa is in Spain, so I called her there, reached her, and hopefully they will hook up.
The Judith Butler dvd came in, "Philosophical Encounters of the Third Kind." Haven't watched it yet. Took Mihaela and Adam out for ice cream yesterday. It's Adam's first time in the U.S. He wants to see the ocean so I hope to get them out here next Friday and go to Hammonassett beach with the doggie.

Give me typical, gimme some typical

Enjoyed watching "House" last night. Am so annoyed when it is preempted by American Idol. What a bunch of crap. Had a client this morning who is going to do a "duathlon." I said, "What's that?" She said, "Running, biking, running." Who knew? Took Bindi to the dog park, and she got freaked out when three big dogs came in, Kramer, Wally, and Sister, and came right up to her and checked her out. They didn't hurt her or anything, I think Bindi was just surprised and caught off guard. She kind of hid under the park bench for a while, and then ventured out after a while to play, but her heart wasn't in it. There were several small children there, too, including a little girl named Knox. She liked it when Bindi kissed her. I asked her mom where the name Knox came from, and the mom said it was her mother's and grandmother's names. They were from Louisiana. Said it was probably a last name at one point.

Made plans to go see the AndFam on April 18, using my frequent flier miles. Will be there for Tobi-wan's birthday, and I-cat's concert

House Mouse

Hey, it's the AndFam! I, G, E, T, D, and A. GAITED. Adjective. Everyone was happy for the sunny day, warm and springy. Hurray hurray! For this fine balmy day! (Photo taken by their mom, K. She takes fabulous photos!)

Rachel and I went and got lunch at Gourmet Heaven. They have absolutely the best salad, fruit, and hot bar in town. So fresh and nutritious. Pricey but worth it. Had a nice chat with Professor Bate who went on and on about how dogs are part of our mind, in fact expand it, while cats are merely aesthetic. He's very entertaining.

Left the two aesthetic felines locked in the bedroom when I left today in order to catch the small brown field mouse who seems to have taken up residence there. I was hoping to come home and find a dead or maimed little thing, but the mousey was still giving them a run for their kibble. Way to stay alive, mouse!

Geeta told us about her wonderful trip to Machu Picchu. She looked revived and excited, and said she came back feeling happy. I was so pleased for her.

I removed the weeds and leaves and debris from the tulips in the garden and look forward to seeing them bloom in a couple of weeks.

Venturina Calidario

Had a hard time getting up this morning, as usual. Took a trazedone last night to help me sleep and it did, but those things always leave me to some degree hungover/groggy. The CPAP people said they can't help me with the fact that I used the machine for a week and couldn't fall asleep with it on. They say I have to talk to my doctor. Fortunately things were not very busy at the office today.
Am trying the new Aetna prescriptions thru the mail program. The co-pay if you go directly thru them is about half what it is at the supermarket pharmacy. With all the prescription drugs I'm on, that'll save me a significant chunk.

Tommaso came by with his fake Armani belt buckle, and pink sweater. Very pretty. He was so glad to see Bindi. And he told me about going to the Venturina Calidario near his family's country house in Tuscany. the calidario is an ancient Roman bath, with pools of hot mineral water available for anyone to use. They serve you tea, and give you massage, and let you sleep if you want. It is a place I will visit when I go in July, hopefully hopefully. He said it was the best part of going home for the school vacation. He was exhausted by seeing so many friends.

Captiva

I've always liked the name Captiva. I was part of a girl gang for about three minutes called Captiva, but I think it fell apart cause I refused to get a black leather jacket.
This is a photo I took of a lovely swing on a private beach on Captiva Island nears Naples, FL. Scott and I were driving around Sanibel and Captiva and I had to stop and capture this. It angers me so that much of the U.S. coastline is privately owned. I mean, who can own the sand and the sea and the stars and the air and the rapture of it all? It was surely meant for all of us.
Had dinner tonight at a bad Chinese place near Guilford. Then a bit of Montezuma's revenge. Before that, Bindi and I went to a "tricks" workshop at the dog trainer's. It was fun. We learned how to do "spin," and "cute face," and "take a bow." Of course they have to be practiced many times. I planted a few tulip bulbs in a pot for outside, and the ones in the house are blooming. Very nice. I've been very sleepy this weekend and have been sleeping a lot.
Yesterday I went to meet the woman who owns the house on West Lake, who has two basement rooms to rent. There are many positives about living there: right on a beautiful lake, a fenced in yard for the dogs, and Bindi got along with her dog Cody right away; the setup would work for my counseling practice; the price is right. The neighborhood has others of a like mind. The owner teaches on Long Island and is gone all week, but here on the weekends, and during the summer so I would get time alone. She likes cats and has one that looks like Camilla. She likes classical music, and seems to be mature. The downside: there are stairs. No bathroom or windows in the basement
Friday I had tea with Annette and Pat. Pat's mother recently died; her husband died last year; her sister the year before that. And two granddaughters born during the same time. Talk about yin and yang. We had a pleasant chat.
The last of the snow should melt this week, and then I'll start some planting. Bought two bags of organic seaweed fertilizer. Spring break is over. Spring planting begins.
Why can't I get this program to make paragraph breaks?

Vernal Equinox

Starts at 8:07 pm. First day of spring is tomorrow. Today is also the Persian New Year. The day was warm and sunny, and I was finally able to shovel the ice off the front porch. Took care of some paperwork at the office. Pam's daughter Donai was with her, and Donai wanted to take Bindi for a walk so we did that. I do so like watching kids learn how to handle a dog, hold the leash, say the commands. My new office rug arrived and looks pretty good. Sam came in and said, "why is it so bright in here?" I said cause I have this new light colored furniture, and have replaced the dark rug with this new one. With the sun shining thru the windows, my office was indeed cheery.
I've signed up Bindi for some recall classes with the dog trainer. Recall is to get the dog to respond when you say, "Bindi, COME!" She's so bad at that. It's only three weeks, but I'll get a better handle on how to train her in that aspect. I've also enrolled her in a one time "tricks" class this Sunday night. That should be fun
The cats:
oddly, both Misty and Camilla are more reluctant than ever to let me cut their nails. They used to be just fine with it. I don't know what changed. They are such enigmatic animals.
New Haven was on the national news tonight, with the following story concerning undocumented workers:
New Haven's next step is a municipal ID card — the first of its kind in the nation — to help undocumented residents get city services or open bank accounts. New Haven is fast becoming a so called "sanctuary city." The city's goal is to be a safe, civil place where people are able to fulfill their ambitions, DeStefano says.
I had a bad dream last night about an old friend who was jerking me around. She used to do that when we were actively friends and hanging out together. Yuk.

Iguana Skin

Rachel was jealous that I was in Florida so she announced today that she and Frances are leaving on Thursday for four days at DisneyWorld in Orlando. They've been there a few times and like it very much. One more week of spring break; our hallway is empty, quiet and devoid of activity. And it's cold here. I wanna go back to Florida!!

Rob called and reminded me of the miniatures exhibit at the Guilford Art Center, so I dropped in to take a look. Nothing could be more than 4 1/2 by 4 1/2 inches, altho it looked like a few cheated a bit. My favorite was a small house/temple created out of shed iguana skin. It was exquisitely executed.

Then I went to the Guilford Green for an anti-war rally. There were about a hundred people there, which was more than I expected. Mostly it was an older group, leftovers from the lefty anti-Vietnam war era. I was glad I went, and hope that similar gatherings in other cities today further cemented the nation's disgust with the killing in Iraq.

Naples, FL

What a nice vacation I had. Better than I had expected. Even got an extra day in Naples because of the snowstorm in the northeast. Came back on Delta on Saturday around 3pm, and had been bumped up to first class, with the flight leaving right on time. Drove back from Hartford via 95 south, to 9 south, to 17 south, to 77 east right into downtown Guilford. Didn't want to cook so had dinner at Som Siam right on the Green. Bindi was not happy about the snow, and refused to pee until she couldn't stand it any more.
Naples is an odd town in some ways. There is an overabundance of McMansions along the Gulf Shore Drive, next to the ocean, magnificently landscaped and lighted. They are beautiful as a kind of art, but to have them as one family places is obscene. Also, too many fancy chic shops selling overpriced goods, and lots of skinny white women in expensive clothing having shallow conversations amongst themselves. Uck. That's west Naples. East Naples, where I stayed, is considered the "wrong" side of town. The Latino and Chicano and Cubana and Mexicana folks live there on whatever salaries they make serving the white communities on the west side of town. I stayed at the Red Roof Inn, which was just ok, barely passable. It was still $100+ per night, and they had put me on the second floor, with no elevator. I should have inquired when I made the reservation, but I naively assume that these places have elevators, and there were no other rooms available. They allow pets at no extra charge, so that and the room rates were why I chose it. The best part about the place was the very nice swimming pool, large and clean and nicely landscaped, altho the water was WAY too warm for me.
I stopped in Fort Myers, FL, where I flew in to last Monday, to vist my friend Sammy who lives at Carefree Resort. It was nice to see her, and her daughter and granddaughter were visiting so that was nice, too. Since I had forgotten to pack Bindi's new nylon collapsible travel kennel, Sammy helped me construct one out of a big cardboard box and some screen netting. It worked beautifully as a place for Bindi to be safe when I needed to leave her in the hotel room. Sammy is dealing with sleep problems too, and on a combination of drugs. Ratz.
My time in Naples was very laid back. Scott was working quite a bit at the Hyundai dealership where he sells cars, so I had time on my own. I was glad to see that he was pretty much recovered from his motorcycle accident, altho he says his leg still badly when he sits too long. He doesn't like the long hours he has to work at the dealership, but the money is good and he's glad about that. We went out to eat a couple of times when he got off work, and a couple of times had dinner at his house with his mom, dad, sister, and nice and nephew. I liked meeting them all. And his dad made delicious stuffed shells.
The beaches in Naples especially the first couple of days were spectacular. The water was cold, but clear and clean, and the shore sloped gently out into the ocean. These beaches are specially created for the residents there and much work goes into making sure the slope is just right and the sand is kept free of debris. I went swimming even tho the water temp was around 72 degrees. The sun was out so that kept me warm. One day Scott and I drove up to Sanibel and Captiva Islands, about an hour north of Naples, but sitting on the Sanibel beach got us coughing, likely from the red tide. It was an extremely windy day, and the choppy waves were not swimmable, even if the red tide hadn't been there. Sanibel was once a good place to go shelling, but no longer. We drove thru the "Ding" Darling nature preseve and saw several types of birds and a small 'gator and a turtle, but not much else. Wrong time of day, I guess.
I had several nice enounters with people in the area, including the guy who sat next to me on the flight down. I chatted with people in the water when I was swimming, with folks who owned doggie/pet shops, with an artist painting tiny watercolors outside Starbucks on 5th Avenue. Bindi and I found a great dog park and spent two hours there one morning. There was a bit of drama before we could have fun, however. We drove up to the gated dog area and a woman was limping, a grimace on her face, and when I got out and asked what was wrong she said she had tripped and skinned her shin on a tree stump nearby. You would have thought she had broken her leg, the way she was carrying on!! I took a look at it, and it was a bad bump and a scrape but she seemed to be more traumatized by the fact that it might leave a scar than anything else. I had little compassion for that, with my completely scarred-up limbs, but I washed off the cut for her, tied my clean handkerchief around it (the one I got in Basel, Switzerland), told her to go call her doctor, and gave her my name and address so she could send the kerchief back to me. She was appreciative of the help, but I couldn't get out of my head how nuts she was worrying about a little old scar. She must have been from west Naples.
We saw several chihuahua mix dogs, including one white one that looked almost exactly like Bindi. Same size, same shape, same ears, same face, just white. Then someone brought in a tiny 3 month old chihuahua mix named Lily, who was chocolate brown, had a bobbed tail and a tilted head and she was just too precious. We all cracked up when she went over to the small drinking trough and jumped up into it and settled her whole diminutive self into the water to cool off! I took some pics and got the name of Lily's mom to send her prints.
One evening Scott took me to the lobby of the Naples Grande Hotel, a very upscale, remodeled resort where his sister works as a babysitter for guests. When we drove down the driveway to the parking garage, there was a speed limit sign that read "9 mph." Not 10, not 5, but 9. As if. The lobby was beautifully and minimally decorated in modern, sleek upholstery, curtains, chairs, bars, foliage, and art. Large, airy, and welcoming. We were only there for coffee, but the dining room had just closed. The waiter gave us coffee to go anyway, for free, and we walked down to the pool and sat under the stars drinking our coffee and chatting. What a lovely night.
Mario's is a family-owned, very casual Greek restaurant on the east side of Naples, owned by people Scott knows. We got there late one night too, but they made us a Greek salad, and one of the owners told us some dirty story about Socrates after Scott bought me a variety of bath soaps they were selling, going by the brand name Socrates, made in Greece.
I went into the Naples Dog Center one afternoon by myself, and got into a conversation with a woman named Marilyn Anderson about dog food. She has convinced me to stop using Science Diet, which is supposed to be a very good dog food, but is, she reported, actually not good at all since it was bought over a few years ago by new owners who downgraded the recipe significantly. She recommends using Solid Gold or Innova, and feeds her own animals a raw diet of meat and vegetables she prepares herself. She says any food that has grain as its first ingredient is bad. The first ingredient should be meat. She is convinced that the increase in cancers in dogs and cats is due to the bad commercial foods out there. Bindi's dog trainer also recommends Solid Gold. The reason apparently that so many vets "recommend" Science Diet is that the SD producers make the vets offers they can't refuse. I told her about Camilla being overweight, and how the vet said to put her on Science Diet RD, but that's mostly fiber she said. The way to help an animal lose weight is to increase the protein, so I am going to try that. Camilla certainly hasn't lost any weight on the SD RD.
The day I left I went to the farmer's market and bought the most delicious raisin and walnut bread, which I completely devoured throughout the day yesterday. I had also purchased at another shop some Florida honey enhanced with Key Lime oil, and that on the bread was heaven. Scott had given me some oranges, grapefruits, and tangerines from his neighbor's yard, since they had moved and given him permission to pick whatever he wanted. Yum yum yum. And yum. I'm gonna ask him to mail me a big box of them. I'd never seen tangerines growing on the tree before.
His dog Herman, also a chihuahua mix, greeted me like a long lost love. He was so affectionate, I was sure he remembered me. That was so moving. I have missed having Herman and Scott around. I asked Scott if he would move back to CT, but he is committed to staying in Florida to help his mum, who is in her 70s. They are very close. It's very nice to see.
We had breakfast one morning at Jane's on 3rd Street, which is part of the "historic" part of Naples, altho you couldn't easily discern that what with the plethora of expensive galleries and clothing shoppes around. Another morning we ate at First Watch, which was better than Jane's, and right on a canal. Blueberry pancakes. Slurp.
I went to the Naples Public Library one afternoon to do some research for Scott and to check my email. That was useful. Since I don't travel with my laptop, I look for the free places for computer access. Most libraries offer that. I checked out one rummage sale Saturday morning at a local church, and when I arrived there must have been a line of 100 people waiting to get in. I thought, wow, this must be quite the tag sale. After I got in, I saw that it was just a bunch of really junky stuff, worse than most of the tag sales I go to in CT. I think everyone was just eager to see if they could get some cool stuff from the rich people for cheap. NOT!

Interesting

I was taking recycling out to the garage, and this guy drives up the driveway, someone I did not recognize. Turns out he wanted to know if the house was for rent or sale. I said no. We got to talking and, long story short, he might be a good contact if I have to leave here in August/Sept. He kind of buys and sells houses, does rennovation, has a couple of apartments in Madison, and knows the Leetes family. I said that something might change at the end of the summer, and he said to call him. We might be able to work something out, he said. He seemed affable, liked Bindi, and I had no reason to mistrust him. I recognized his name from the caller i.d. from a couple of weeks ago. Hmmm, I think the universe is taking care of me.
Ok, ok, so I'm a little concerned about Bindi Irwin. Saw her on a repeat of Larry King last night, with her mum, and she seemed very scripted, overly polite, and kept talking about how much she liked show business. She said she felt "at home" on the stage, and very confident. Her mom kept silent the whole time she was talking, and has assured us that this is Bindi's choice, and since she was put in front of a camera literally since the day she was born, it's no surprise she is such a ham, like her dad. She said there were no animals she was afraid of, but liked crocs and snakes the best. I will continue to follow her career/life. I wonder what she'll be like in ten years.
BindiPup and I just got out of the shower. What a good doggie. Doesn't mind the shower at all, but isn't overly thrilled with it either. But she's gotta smell good for the trip. Our flight isn't until tomorrow morning at 11am, so I don't have to get up super early. Those days are gone.
Tulips are coming up, and the dianthus leaves are greening up. Snow drops are in bloom, and I'll be able to plant cold weather crops when I get back. It was warmish and sunny today, but I was inside the whole time cleaning and semi packing.
Had an okay time at the NHLGCC fundraiser last night, the Dorothy Awards. One honoree gave a very moving speech, the meal was not bad, and we had a good group at the table: Rob, Robert, Jim, Tony, Nick, Emma, Rachel, Frances, and Jolisa. Still I was ready to leave after two hours. My two hour limit for socializing.
Ok, bloggers, I'll blog ya in a week. Peace, out.

Of Mice and Men. And Dogs.

Monday I'm off to Florida. Will try to pack before the last minute, which means will try to have the suitcase in the car by 10 pm on Sunday night. Went to visit another house sharing situation today but the bedrooms were up a steep flight of stairs, and I think the woman who owns the house is more "casual" than I would like, if you know what I mean. It was a nice big house, tho, with a heated in ground swimming pool, and she had a black lab puppy. Oh well.

Saw the shrink yesterday and got trazodone to help me get to sleep while using the CPAP machine. Will take on that project when I get back from Florida. Can't stand having yet another prescription drug to take. Oh well.

Had birthday dinner for Dilwyn on Wednesday night, with Rob and Robert and Kevin and Ludger. It was very nice. I got Dilwyn a new fluffy blanket for her bed. She's deaf, and has a sensitive stomach, so thought something tactile would be best. I think Rob liked it. They call her Grandma. We got to talking about the movie "Office Space" and none of them had ever seen it, so when I was at Stop & Shop yesterday I bought them a copy and dropped it off. It's such a hysterically funny movie.

Heard a story on NPR about the Fugees soccer team near Atlanta, GA. Fugees is short for Refugees and the kids on the team are immigrants from war-ravaged countries who have come to the U.S. It's a boys' teams, but they have a woman coach, and apparently it's the best thing in these kids' lives.

Breakthrough with Bindi today. She ran into my bedroom to eat the leftover cat food or cat poop, whichever she could get to first, but I yelled, "Bindi, Stay!" and she stopped and let me pick her up before she ingested anything. Hurray for training!

Tim Miller performed for Tirza's class on Wednesday. He was awesome. Talented, inspiring, political, funny, intelligent, sweet. It's rare to see a performance artist of his calibre in such a small venue with so few people. Apparently not too many people know who he is 'cause there wasn't much of a turnout even tho we publicized the class as being open to the public. Oh well. I'm glad I saw him.
Bought some mouse poison today at Page's for my Yale office. Because I keep dog kibble and treats there, mousies are a problem, as they are all over Yale, with many of their buildings being 300 years old or more. I tried some little plastic traps with peanut butter as bait, but that didn't work, so will use the bad stuff while I'm away for ten days. Didn't want to use it 'cause of Bindi coming to work with me, but will throw out whatever the mice haven't eaten when I come back.
Had a bad dream about my mother last night. She was caught in some kind of scandal and ended up in jail. At first I felt badly for her, but then because what she had done was so awful, I knew she had to be there. Can't remember what she did in the dream.

New Rug

This is the new rug I ordered for my Yale office. Trying to lighten things up, which already has been greatly enhanced by my light colored desk/hutch setup, which I love. Twenty five years of crap and now with a little over two years to go, I get nice stuff. Ain't it the way it goes.
Had coffee with Rob this morning. He can't get a break. Yesterday one of the neighbor dogs bit Arnold's ear in play and the cut wouldn't stop bleeding, so another trip to the vet's. Dillwyn is doing better, but still frail. The so-called Elizabethan collars have been redesigned with flashy fabrics and foam inserts, and Arnold looks very silly wearing one.
Watched The Notebook on dvd last night. Another heartwrencher, with James Garner and Gena Rowlands, both of whom I love. Rowlands played an older woman with senile dementia who was present to her husband only for short periods at a time. Otherwise she did not know who he was. Much of the film was about their courtship as young adults. Did ten minutes of sorting through papers, and that was ten minutes too long, but ten minutes more than I usually do. Yea me!
Had my eyebrows waxed for the first time in my life today. Really neatens them up and they look nice. Got all my hair chopped off again, too. Didn't quite want it as short as it is, but it grows fast, so who cares. Will be good for Florida. Have been rethinking taking Bindi as the Naples beaches don't allow dogs, but I don't imagine I'll be spending all that much time on the beach myself. Must remember to look up the water temps down there before I go. And I guess I can just leave her in the hotel room when I go out to the beach for a couple of hours. That shouldn't be a problem. I'll be bringing a collapsible kennel. There's at least one pontoon boat tour that allows dogs, so that will be cool.
Trying to convince Rob and Robert to go with Rachel and Frances and me to The Dorothy Awards on Saturday night. They need a night of just hanging out, with a buffet, a band, silent auction, and socializing. Rob is having a very quick and small dinner tomorrow for Dillwyn's 14th birthday. Happy Birthday, DillGirl.

Bridge to Terabithia

Saw the movie Bridge to Terabithia today with Rachel and Frances. Although it was charming and clever and amusing in parts, it made me very sad. The way kids treat one another (i.e., Margaret Atwood, Cat's Eye), and the despair of a sensitive, talented child unseen by his parents. We all cried. Ugh. Came home and went to sleep.
Laurie Anderson quoting Don Delillo saying something like, "The only great artists left are the terrorists because they still have the ability to surprise us." Suze Orman siting courage and cleanliness as two of the eight qualities of wealthy women. Hmm. Reading that one gimmick to deal with procrastination is do approach a task for ten minutes at a time, so as not to get overwhelmed. Think I can use that one. In fact, went thru a couple piles of papers this evening, filed some, threw some out. Been liking Snickers Marathon Energy Bars. Still too much sugar, but they have ten grams of protein, which helps to ameliorate the effects of the sugar. And they are way yum.
Wish it would warm up again, like it did yesterday. Poor Bindi needs to run around the dog park. I fear she does not get enough exercise from me cause I can't walk her as much as I should.

Lunar Eclipse

Today Bindi and I went to find Flatiron Road, and the house to which I might consider moving. The house is small, but directly on a medium size lake, I mean the lake is in the backyard. A less fancy part of Guilford, on the North Branford line, off Rt. 80. Still much talking to be done with the person who owns it. Saw the resident golden retriever sunning on the back steps. The neighborhood reminded me of the cluster of small cottages at Indian Neck in Branford. Then we went to Agway to get Bindi a new halter, since the clasp on her other one broke. My bad. The North Shore Animal Shelter van was there, adopting out pets. All the workers were women. Big surprise. Somebody had bumper stickers on their car which read, "My Pit Bull is Smarter than your President." And "Let the Oil Companies Send Their Own Troops." 'nough said. We got more treats, another tie out line for the campus, and some Nature's Miracle. Can't be without that magic liquid. Then we went to S & S for provisions and the Girl Scouts were there so we loaded up on cookies, mostly for others. Altho I just ate a whole box of Samoas. Yum. We stopped over at Annette's on the way home to visit Bravo but he was not in a social mood, so A and I just chatted for a while. We went with M & M last night to see the film "The Queen," which we all liked very much. It felt authentic and since I was very fond of Princess Diana, the story was of great interest to me. Helen Mirren was, of course, dynamite. James Cromwell was Prince Phillip.
Got an hour and a half massage with Dana on Friday afternoon. I fell asleep more quickly last night than I have in months. She's been going to Native American sweat lodge ceremonies. I remember doing one a hundred zillion years ago in my 20s. It was quite something. Wednesday Paisley Currah gave a good talk at Yale, and then I went out for Thai food with him and a few others. Paisley seems like a very kind person. He talked about recently moving in with his partner and her two daughters. I turned him on to Zoo Tycoon, and we talked about how someone needs to create more gender-neutral kids games. We all hate the Barbie site.
Does anyone know what the best glucosamine/chondroitin supplement is? One of my vets who used to be a pharmacist said that the people who make Cosequin, the supplement for animals and the one recommended for Bindi and Rob's dogs, makes a human version called Cosemin. The vet said that there is better testing on the stuff for the dogs, and he thinks the human version would be far superior to anything out there already. So Rob got me some at Costco today, but it's way expensive. I'll try it first while I get more info.

Stuff

Slushy day. Lea wants to work less, but Emma will pick up her hours. Taking Girl Scout Cookie orders. Etch a Sketch. Chocolate Easter eggs. Can't find a rug I like for the office. Ice cream binge. Saw the nutritionist. Acid vs alkaline ph, the need for balance. Saw a client; he had made incredibly brave strides standing up for himself. Yea! Lebanon bologna? Visit from Tommaso. TL with big news. David finding the Kinsey first editions in the WGSS library that he thinks I should keep in my office. Finally did the 20 page application for the research affiliate I had been putting off for weeks. Talked with Rachel more about the Italy trip; side trip to Granada. T. wants me to bring Bindi, but I think it's too much for her. Marina di Pisa.

A Case of the Mondays

Bought this little guy on sale at S&S for a little friend for Chinese New Year. You push the button and it sings "My Girl," while moving side to side and flapping its mouth up and down. I thought it was hysterical. When I gave it as a gift, the little friend threw it on the floor and jumped back. She hated it. "I don't like the eyes," she said. So I'll take it into the office and entertain my warped adult friends. I felt a bit rejected that my gift was received with such distain, but I got over it. I still think it's a hoot. Or, rather, an oink.

I had a busy weekend and was exhaustede this morning, so did not go into the office. I woke at seven to see a beautiful snowfall, the first really of the season. Got up finally at noon to walk the dog and some of the snow had already melted but it was still lovely. I could tell Bindi wanted off the leash to go scampering thru it, but I could not let her. Watched a couple of movies, slept some more, checked my email, talked on the phone, and that was about it.

Yesterday morning I saw Dana for a massage, and I think that was part of my tiredness today. Sometimes getting massage releases toxins from the body and that can cause some fatigue. I hadn't had a massage in a few months it seems, so made another appt. for this Friday, for an hour and a half this time. Picked up Mihaela and Tommaso in New Haven and after some confusion, we came out to Guilford to celebrate T. passing his oral exams. He had been wanting to see my house, and I always like to share this lovely home with others. Rachel and Frances came out later, and we ate yummy deli food, built a big fire, and played jacks. Rachel and I were pretty good, and M and T and F got better the more they practiced. I remember playing jacks as a kid with a golf ball on the cement sidewalks. I had a hard time finding those old fashioned heavy jacks, but did, online, at the Vermont Country Store, and they are very nice. The little balls kind of suck, but M had given me some for Bindi that will be just perfect. A good time was had by all.

On Saturday, I went to the Stony Creek Library, did some shopping, and came back to the house where I went thru the box of papers mentioned previously. So all weekend I didn't really get the many hours of solitude/alone time that I seem to need. On Wednesday, I went to R.J. Julia and heard Natalie read from her book "Inheritance." It was a small group, but engaged, and it was so fine to see N. and Paolo, and to finally meet Natalie's parents, who will be renting a house in Stony Creek this summer for the month of July.

I have not gotten permission from Paolo and Tommaso, both native Italians, to go to Italy and avoid the big cities. What a relief.

In Memoriam

Went through a large box of old papers today. Put me in a foul mood. Found some old letters from "friends" I no longer speak to. Some old art work of mine. Articles written by others. Poems and cartoons from the New Yorker. Took forever, but I was glad to get it done. Now, only 100 more such boxes to go through, or so it seems. But if I have to move out of here in August or shortly thereafter, I don't want to schlep all the stuff I moved 2 1/2 years ago. It helped to have a fire burning the whole time in the fireplace, and that other people were around. Visited R and R, yesterday. Rob had pulled a muscle in his back and was in great pain; Dillwyn was better, but not completely. Poor girl, she's getting old and frail. Felt so bad for the both of them. Watched "Intolerable Cruelty" on dvd last night. George Clooney was so funny. I think he's becoming the baby boomers' Cary Grant. Billy Bob Thornton was in it, too, in a hysterical part. Had annoying WGSS council meeting yesterday, then had a meltdown after D. came in and told me how he felt about things. Dill's memorial page is up: http://www.guilfordvet.com/Dill.htm
Think I heard this quote yesterday on NPR: Happiness is the anticipation of pleasure. Or something like that.

Year of the Pig, 4704-05

Happy New Year, everyone. Today, Annette and I went to Fired Up!, the paint your own pottery shoppe, and she glazed a small plate, and I a big mug. I was having a bad backache so I was glad A. finished quickly, and so did I. She had never done this activity, and was eager to try it. I wanted to paint a picture frame, but they didn't have any.

Yesterday was Marian's birthday, 17, and we had a nice dinner for her, just the three of us. I stayed up late trying to figure out the iTunes website, and today finally figured out how to download songs. My first download was "Vincent," by Don McLean, and my second was "A Case of You," by Joni Mitchell. Still the undercurrent of meloncholia persists. I went to pick up the WGSS banner that was being made by a graphics/editing shoppe in Guilford, and when I complained to the woman that I had a backache, she told this long story of going to a chiropractor for months for a bad back, with no relief. She finally was diagnosed with high cholesterol and told to lose weight. She cut out starches and desserts, and began some stretching exercises, and lost 36 lbs. Her backache went away. Yet again another reminder that my being out of shape is killing me.

Chocolate Dog

Just as I was beginning to feel unloved cause I didn't get a Valentine from anyone on Wednesday, I came into the office yesterday and found two!! Chocolate truffles in a tiny gold box from M, M, & S, and a sweet card and book from Mihaela of Marjane Satrapi cartoons, called "Embroideries." I said, Mihaela, how did you know I do embroidery? She said, oh, this book isn't about that. She said, it's about Iranian women's sex lives! Oh my! And Carolyn has said she is sending me a BIG Valentine, and to let her know when it arrives. It hasn't yet. What could it be? Then Rob called to say he and Robert had gotten me a card, but due to the ice they didn't go out on Wednesday. So, guess what? I am loved, after all.

I bought a chocolate bar from Pam, who was selling them for her kid's fundraiser. I bought one, put it in my coat pocket, went back to my office. Went out of the office for a few minutes, and when I came back found chocolate bar wrapper on the floor. Apparently, Bindi had gotten the bar out of my pocket and ate the whole thing. Ok, chocolate is bad for dogs, so after a call to the vet who said to look out for vomiting and diarrhea and effects of stimulants and news that it was good she hadn't eaten baker's chocolate, I waited. Nothing. So we went home, and Bindi got off her leash, and despite shivering from the cold and raising her paws alternately off the cold icy snow, she would not come in the house. I finally called my neighbor Annette who came over, and after I came into the house and hid, Bindi came in for Annette. Once again, I have not done enough training to get Bindi to come when I call. My bad. You'd think the dog would have enough sense to come in when it was so freezing, but noooooooooooo. All I can think is that she was torn by the desire to be outside off the leash and her desire to come in and be warm. Been there.

Bad backache today, probably from tensing up from the cold, and walking gingerly over ice and snowdrifts, and hauling firewood. Had a roaring fire for my two clients last night. Hot flames in the fireplace are at least as therapeutic as anything I have to say.

Watched "Grey's Anatomy" last night. Cliffhanger, but of course Meredith will pull through, with her revelations of having seen Denny and the bomb guy in her near death experience.

Ice Storm vs Sunny Beach

Hmmm, which do I want, which do I want, hmmmm . . . . Ucky storm here today, mostly rain on the coast here, but there was a parking ban in New Haven so I didn't go into the office. Now everything is covered with a very hard layer of ice.

Spent some time over the last weekend with Rob and Robert. I worked on my crewel embroidery while they continued cleaning out their attic. It was fun. I said, I'm coming over but you don't have to entertain me. I just sat in a chair and we all chatted while we worked. Then I went over to Annette's and clipped her new cat Bravo's nails. He was very good, and he is the most affectionate feline. She made a good choice. Sunday we went to Agway and bought pet stuff. I've ordered a soft sided dog crate off Ebay to travel with; it's larger than the airplane carrier I put Bindi in when we fly; it's for when we are visiting someone or staying in a hotel.

Finished "Bed Rest," Sarah Bilston's first novel. She gave me a copy when I visited her and her new babies a couple of weeks ago. It was a good read, and her descriptions of having to not do hardly anything for six weeks but lie (lay?) on her left side due to low amniotic fluid was compelling. My friend Natalie Danford will be at R.J. Julia booksellers next week doing a reading from HER first novel, "Inheritance." I've ordered a copy off the net; hope it gets here in time for me to read it before I go to see her. She and Paolo are one of my favorite couples.

Rob M. called from The Hague. He's sick, but making a living teaching piano. He's off to Tanzania in a couple of weeks, a free trip from one of his past piano students! Wowwie zowwie!

DogsDeserveBetter.org

Rachel sent me this link. Like homeless humans or abused and neglected children, here's another species that needs help. When growing up in East Peoria, Illinois, we lived next to the Cripes, who had a dog named Nipper, a dirty white cocker spaniel I believe, who was chained to her outside dog house all the time. I think we had some inkling that there was something wrong with that, but then on the other side of our house lived the Browns with a black dog named Nigger, and we kids were clueless to that insult for years. Which was worse?

Little Bindi lives a life of luxury, although I wish I could just let her roam around the house and not worry about her damaging anything. She is very comfortable in her crate, but I'd like to not have to put her in there so often. She's getting over some eye irritation that made the whites of her right eye very very red, so off to the vet for some ointment, and to have her anal glands emptied. She was doing that scoot across the floor motion, and my friend David suggested that she might need that emptying procedure done. Doesn't hurt, and like everything else, she was very good at allowing it to be done. Ok, is that TMI? Here's something fun: my friend Mihaela is totally into beading right now and made Bindi a very pretty red necklace. I know, I know, but Mihaela wanted to do it!

Have put the breaks on my winter blues by booking a flight to Fort Myers, FL, for five days over spring break. Going to see my friend Scott who lives in Naples and is recovering from a motocycle accident. Found a cheap fare for midweek, but that will be quickly added to with a hotel bill, rental car, and air fare for the dog, if I decide to take her. At least the flight is non-stop from Hartford. Can't stay with Scott as he lives with his family right now, but am looking forward to those marvelous white Naples beaches. Wonder if the water will be warm enough to swim in mid-March.

Had lunch with Dick from the garden, who is now working at Yale. He often wonders what he's doing in New Haven, and would like to move back to California. Know the feeling. Birthday lunch for David on Friday. Indian food. Yum.

Winter Blues

Googling images of "winter blues" produced many great results.
Go check this one out in its larger form.

Stunning. Fractals. Fractions. Fragments. Fragile Fragged. Not even a word, but descriptive all the same.

Lack of light. Lack of motivation. Fear of loss, losing, those lost. Maybe the generic Effexor isn't as good. Can't be PMS. Although Rachel has that. Maybe I caught it from her. Yesterday, when we and Frances went to get the dog's nails cut, then to see the o-so-fine "Pursuit of Happyness," with Will Smith and his son Jaden. Then to the grocery store. On Saturday I had to travel back into New Haven to get Bindi's eye medicine (it's getting better) which I left in the office, then for a not-so-good haircut cause my usual person wasn't on that day, then to the farm market to get soup and bread and salad and flowers for Daniel and Sarah who just had twins a couple of months ago, then to see them in their killer gorgeous antique house, then to Hartford to have dinner with Bette, whom I see way too seldom.

Trying to put some photos in albums after all these years, liking to do it with other around more than alone, time travelling with each picture, sending dupes to friends. Peter was here from London for a week; stayed in the New Haven Hotel with it's indoor pool and huge stainless steel warm therapy tub (used to be part of the medical center before it became a hotel). He's one of the sanest people I know.

Went on a search for tea cozies for Mihaela; finally had to order off Ebay, which had some nice ones. None of these New England shops carry the things. Love giving gifts that people mention off handedly that they want, then finding them, then the presentation.

More has happened. It all seems to blur into the same meloncholic whole, tho.

Happy Birthday, Bindi!

Today is Bindi's second birthday. She got to eat twice as many treats as usual, and Rachel (who took the nice pic) and I took her to the dog park. The humans ate chocolate covered cherries to celebrate.

My friend Scott in Florida is recovering from a motorcycle accident. He was on his Vespa when a car plowed sideways into him. Fortunately, they were both going slowly, so even though Scott was thrown across the car's hood and into the windshied, he managed to escape with only torn ligaments in his legs. Which is bad enough. He was certainly being protected. When his mother got to the scene, she picked up what she thought was a piece of his bike, but which actually was the guardian angel charm she had given him to carry on the bike. His angel was clearly on duty. He's on crutches for eight weeks, and was getting very bored, so I sent him a paint by number kit.

Last weekend Margaret had guests over for dinner on Friday night, and more guests on Saturday afternoon, which was much fun. We got a tour from Louis of the woodworking shoppe near the house, which was extremely fascinating. We had many fires in the fireplace, since the weather was cold and rainy. May have another dog playmate in the neighborhood, if the weather will ever cooperate.

My friend Rob who lives in the Hague called yesterday. He teaches piano lessons there, and is becoming quite successful with the business. In fact, one of his students who moved from the Hague back to her home in Tanzania sent him a round trip ticket so that he can go to Tanzania and give her lessons there! Imagine! I was so envious. He had also recently been on vacation to Basel, Switzerland, where I visited a few years ago. A beautiful place, esp. the old town.

Saw my endocrinologist last week. I'm still not officially diabetic, but my insulin production is high, which is bad. But at least I am still producing it. Losing weight is the cure. Aaarrgghh.

Black Squirrels and Munchkins

These critters are extremely attractive, and at first glance look like cats. Just back from a week in Michigan with my brother and his family. Lots of laughs and fun kid stuff and puzzles and hugs and crying and movies and home baked goodies and more laughs and hugs and dog parks and walks around the block and playing with the doggie and more laughs and hugs and sleeping and hugs. Oh, did I mention laughing? Great new fort in the back yard, and I. with her new pierced ears, and Gark getting a chemistry lesson from Poppie, and that surprisingly difficult wildflower puzzle, and Tobi-Wan, all sensitive and sweet, and cuddly Buzz, and Em, a flower and poet, and Di-di, loud chatterbox outgoing and always in motion. Kim was a dream letting me sleep, and making me goodies from spelt flour. Bindi-loo Who all nicely behaved and glad to be with the kids, and running for balls in the fenced in back yard, and little Andy Dyke from next door always wanting to play and see the pup. So sad to leave the munchkins. We watched "The Wizard of Oz," they for the first time; kept asking me "what's the music again for the witch?" Do do do do doooo do, do do do do doooo do. You know the one.
